Russian troops took control of the Novoselovskoye settlement. The dynamics of hostilities in the Lugansk People’s Republic remain tense and the situation can change quite quickly. Nevertheless, the return of control in Novoselovskoe demonstrates the strategic and tactical ability of the Russian armed forces to reorient and maintain their positions in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a new development, Ukrainian military officials are warning that Russia is preparing another offensive to retake territory lost to the hasty retreat in September last year. The commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, announced that the Russians had launched an offensive in the direction of Kupyansk, in northeastern Ukraine. Russian offensive forces “are aiming to wipe out our forces in the Kupyansk region and continue to advance deeper,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gathering of a significant group of troops may indicate preparation for a large-scale counterattack, especially since as mentioned above, Russian troops successfully captured the settlement of Novoselovskoye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The representative of the eastern group of Ukrainian forces Serhii Cherevatyi followed up on this matter, adding that in the Lyman-Kupiansk direction, the Russians have amassed an offensive force that includes “over 100,000 manpower, more than 900 tanks, artillery systems, 370 multiple rocket launchers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NASAMS is down for repairs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first NASAMS arrived in Ukraine in November 2022, and several more have since been delivered. The systems showed excellent results from the start, taking down 100% of the targets in their attack range, although the details were kept secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, during this period, even this modern Western air defense system was damaged. Operator Nikita says that some of the NASAMS arrays were taken out of service for repairs. Important to note here, that the operator does not specify whether specific elements of the system were temporarily withdrawn from service or the entire system. Nor did he say whether it was the result of an enemy strike or whether the weapons were simply worn out from heavy use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ole Jorgen Maao, a researcher at the Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy, if one or more radars are destroyed, most of the launch platforms can still launch missiles. The necessary information comes to the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNASAMS itself is more of a communications system that can also shoot down aircraft. “Even if the heart of the radar system is destroyed, the launchers can still receive target information from the network of multiple connected NASAMS,” it says. the same goes for launchers. Destroying one would not paralyze the system, as an array usually consists of at least several launch platforms loaded with missiles. And as a modern Western-style air defense system, it foresees that another launcher could be connected to the network as a replacement for the time needed to repair the damaged one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Norway announced that it will donate a NASAMS support package to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which includes two more complete arrays and spare parts “to ensure the durability, reserve and flexibility” of the NASAMS already delivered to Ukraine, according to the Norwegian Ministry of National Defence. These parts will also be useful in repairing any damaged equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n
