{"id":14461,"date":"2023-07-06T17:53:28","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T14:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/?p=14461"},"modified":"2023-07-06T17:53:29","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T14:53:29","slug":"eurobarometer-seven-out-of-ten-europeans-believe-that-corruption-is-widespread-in-their-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/?p=14461","title":{"rendered":"Eurobarometer: Seven out of ten Europeans believe that corruption is widespread in their country"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results of the extraordinary Eurobarometer on the attitude of citizens and businesses towards corruption in the European Union were published by the Commission (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/eurobarometer\/surveys\/detail\/2968\" title=\"\">Citizens&#8217; attitudes towards corruption in the EU in 2023<\/a>&#8220;), which are not only optimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven out of ten respondents believe that corruption is widespread in their country, with the percentage in the case of Greeks reaching 93%.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-16.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-16.png 600w, https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-16-300x111.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, 78% agree that too close ties between business and politics lead to corruption. In fact, 60% believe that corruption is part of the business culture in their country, while 57% agree that in their country, the only way to succeed in business is to have political connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most people find corruption unacceptable<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than seven in ten respondents consider it unacceptable to give a gift (72%) or a favor (72%) to get something from a public administration or service, while 83% consider it unacceptable to give money for the same reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 64% of Europeans believe that corruption is unacceptable. However, 27% believe it is acceptable to give a gift or favor (26%) in order to get something from the public administration or a public service, while 16% believe it is acceptable to give money for this reason.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"99\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-17.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-17.png 600w, https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-17-300x50.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost three-quarters (74%) believe that there is corruption in their country&#8217;s national public institutions, while 73% believe that there is corruption in their country&#8217;s local or regional public institutions and 60% believe that corruption is part of the business culture in their country.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"95\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-18.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-18.png 600w, https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-18-300x48.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>They do not know where to report cases of corruption<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less than half of respondents (45%) say they know where to report a case of corruption if they experience or observe it. Respondents are most likely to know where to report a case of corruption in Malta (63%) and Slovenia (62%), and least likely in Poland (32%) and Hungary (33%).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-19.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-19.png 600w, https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-19-300x109.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>They don&#8217;t complain because they know it&#8217;s pointless<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">47% say that the difficulty of proving corruption is a major reason why people do not report it.
