We believe that the time has come for professionals and information businesses to seriously ask themselves how much artificial intelligence can change the form and content of their work. They will have to study how much and how jobs will be threatened \u2013 and which ones exactly \u2013 in the media industry, which is already undergoing constant and often painful changes since the advent of the Internet some two decades ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is a great possibility that traditional, investigative and qualitative journalism will find the opportunity to take revenge from the “copy paste” model and the pursuit of “clicks” and “likes”. However, in the present analysis we will summarize the eight main changes that the use of Artificial Intelligence can cause in the media industry. Specifically,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1.<\/strong> The first concerns specialization as, as it is emphasized, “commercial or general downloadable content will see its value degraded”. Consequently, “any company that bets exclusively on high traffic looks doomed,” while “the demand for specialized topics that require specific knowledge will increase.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2.<\/strong> The second has to do with trust and the interpretation is simple: \u201cArtificial intelligence will cause a flood of false and targeted content (\u2026) which will lead readers to seek safer and more trusted sources of information \u2013 preferably directly and not from the back door of social media.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3.<\/strong> The third change relates precisely to these direct relationships that are expected to be built. The reason is that as ChatGPT and other similar tools will now offer complete answers and not links, companies will be obliged, if they want to survive, to strengthen their direct links with the customers \u2013 consumers of the content they produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4. <\/strong>The fourth believes that the importance of incoming “packages” will gradually increase, which implies the better use of newsletters, especially as Microsoft and Google make it “magically easy” to manage e-mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5.<\/strong> The fifth focuses on “healthy content”, since it is estimated that there is a lot of “scum” on television and several news websites. And this despite the fact that “consumers are entitled to better content, therefore healthier and more useful”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 6.<\/strong> The sixth lies in the fact that “consumers want most news, as well as practical information, to be offered to them with the greatest possible efficiency”. Thus, as it is characteristically noted, “the need to see and read news will not die, but the younger audience will want it to be shorter and provided to them on demand”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 7.<\/strong> The seventh change is directly related to the sixth and concerns the depth of information. \u201cAs most content will be shorter, consumers will have more time for podcasts and in-depth articles, such as those included in magazines. At the same time, the need for these to be truly exceptional and original will increase. So all the in-between \u2013 the boring stories that journalists write for themselves or to fill holes in websites \u2013 will disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n 8.<\/strong> Finally, a dangerous contradiction is identified, which has to do with “information inequality”. This is because \u201cwhile it has never been a better time for users to demand high-quality content, delivered to them more efficiently (\u2026) it has never been easier to create and spread misleading, hateful or false information to such a large extent and at no cost.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n In this last point, which captures the dialectical relationship between the enormous possibilities and the threats of new technologies for humans, it seems that the biggest gamble is being played.
