The information being circulated is contradictory. While the diplomatic background is clearly raging in an attempt to find a coordinated exit from the conflict, the reality on the ground and the irrational expectations that have been cultivated do not allow it. The pawns on the communication chessboard of real wars and their gleeful attitude continues, making life difficult for all those who, despite the difficulty, seek disengagement from the conflict. At the initial stage it produced regular results, but at the strategic level it proves to produce dead ends.

The last “blow” was the information that the head of the CIA was sent to Kyiv and Moscow to look for a point of compromise, but without success. The Russians do not intend to give up the territorial gains, for which much blood has been shed. On the other hand, the Ukrainians declare that they would only discuss peace if the Russian troops would withdraw from the areas they have occupied. With characteristic delay, Moscow denied the news, but gave the impression that it wished not to be blamed for the failure.

If this is a correct observation, the Russians appreciate the initiative of the USA, they are interested in closing the front, but in a way that can justify the military mobilization inside the country. It also means that the Americans also realize that ending the war inevitably requires painful compromises on the part of the Ukrainians. Consequently, the problem is now Kyiv. And since it would be unfair on the one hand for Westerners to think that Ukraine is fighting on behalf of the US and secondarily for the entire West and on the other hand to accuse it of being intransigent, the problem ends up being entirely in Washington’s hands.

The US has played a key role in heavily equipping Ukraine with all kinds of weapon systems (fighter jets are now being requested), having spent a total of about half a trillion. dollars for the war effort in Ukraine, which is proving to be a bottomless barrel. They have also put suffocating pressure on NATO allies to shoulder greater burdens to share the unaffordable costs. In this effort, they also gave Russian President Putin a powerful communication weapon of internal legitimization of the war effort.

The intention to send “Leopard” tanks created strong associations in Russia with the past: “It is unbelievable but true… We are threatened again by German tanks”! Communicatively, it reinforced Moscow’s argument that the regime in Kyiv is linked to neo-Nazism. And now the German tanks are reminiscent of Nazi Germany’s Operation Barbarossa, which cost 27 million Soviet dead: About eleven were soldier casualties, another ten civilian casualties, and another 8-9 million casualties from disease and starvation.

The communication exploitation of the intention to hand over German tanks to the Ukrainians is intended to disguise the Russian invasion, which is easier to justify as homeland defense, since the operations are taking place in eastern Ukraine. The introduction of German tanks into the equation, however, serves Putin’s strategy communicatively, as it brings back memories and activates reflexes.

Incongruous as it may seem at first glance, Ukraine’s equipment does not contradict the pursuit of an end to the armed conflict. Stopping a war requires convergence of the wills of the belligerents, which assumes that the two sides have reached an “equilibrium point” associated with the cost-benefit balance as seen by each side. Ukraine’s equipment is intended to frighten Russia into the possibility of a successful Ukrainian counterattack. But they forget that the Russian side does not have the option of full withdrawal that Zelensky is demanding to discuss ending operations. This leads to an impasse and conflicts remain the only perspective.

The cost-benefit, however, is also linked to how much a people can objectively withstand, beyond any disposition for resistance. In Ukraine, while there are clear signs that between the real belligerents, namely the US and Russia, there is now an interest in ending the conflict, Kiev’s stance complicates the equation. Although his dependence on the West to continue the war effort is absolute, how can Zelensky justify territorial losses to the Ukrainians when his rhetoric even includes the liberation of Crimea? That is why he is asking for all kinds of weapon systems. In fact, when it declares the intention to continue operations, it “legitimizes” every new offensive move by the opponent.

In anticipation of their expected major offensive, the Russians are stepping up their bombing of critical infrastructure in Ukraine to dramatically increase the cost to the Ukrainian people and by extension to Kyiv in an attempt to force a change of heart. The increasingly limited human resources of Ukraine, due to the heavy losses on the battlefields, do not leave much room for Zelensky. The pro-war nonsense in the West seems to be landing and more rational strategic considerations are coming to the fore, which in the past period were erased from the public debate.

No matter how bigoted you are, the day of vindication is not far for those who refused to see the conflict in Ukraine through “ideological glasses”, despite suffering a peculiar bullying and disgrace, after being labeled pro-Russian and anti-American. Ridiculousness in all its glory! Simply put: The biggest problem for the US right now in the Ukraine war is Kyiv! His attitude, however, was shaped by Washington. Because following the trodden path of Afghanistan and Iraq, it chose to devote itself to its strategic goal of “shortening” Russia, without thinking about the complications at the strategic level, which have led to a stalemate.

In Afghanistan he used the Mujahideen against the Soviets. Does anyone need reminding how they affected the strategic level in the decades that followed? In Iraq they focused on overthrowing the regime of Saddam Hussein, using the false argument of possessing weapons of mass destruction. The Americans now find that the result, a few decades later, does not serve their strategic goals. Having said that, how unreasonable is it to expect a repeat of a similar scenario in Ukraine? That is, to discuss the American mistakes of this period, which will have negatively affected the strategic capabilities of the United States.

Initially, the silly “analyses” of the train, educated and uneducated “useful idiots” of one side and the other prevailed. All those who cheered, demonstrating strategic blindness, indifference to geography and ignorance of history. The so-called western academic community will suddenly remember… its good self and begin the “revelations” that will irreparably expose those who today express “political correctness” and indeed with McCarthyian fanaticism. That is why serious countries need to plan foreign policy based on their national interests and not be defined differently.

The war continues despite the bitter cold prevailing in Ukraine.
