At the end of the nineteenth century, a young Danish priest travels to Iceland (then part of Denmark), aiming to build a church, but also to capture the landscapes and its inhabitants on camera. But as he goes deeper and deeper into the difficult, inhospitable place, both his mission and his general certainties in life until then are put to the test.

Drawing creatively from various sources – from the cinema of Bergman and Werner Herzog to the literature of Graham Greene – Palmason creates a modestly expressive, but at the same time epic film, mainly thanks to the topics it deals with, but also to its long duration (almost two and a half hours). We steadily follow the course of the priest through a square shot, similar to that of the early cameras, which he also uses.

His “invasion” of a largely virgin world is welcomed by some, while others are more suspicious of the Danish visitor. Nature itself seems to a degree to oppose him. However, the hospitality he will find in the bosom of a rural family will warm his heart and at the same time will put him in unprecedented temptations. This whole struggle between the Divine and the human law is one of the main themes of the film, which however also examines the issue of communication and the conflicts that its lack brings. “Godland” takes place when Iceland was under Danish rule.

“My life has been divided between these two very different countries which have shaped me in many ways. I wanted to explore the contrasts in environment, temperament and language or the source of misunderstandings. Furthermore, the contrasts in form and feeling and how these are revealed when you put these two countries next to each other,” observes the director.

The finale of his film, which partly adopts the codes of ancient tragedy, looks like an “ode” to mortality. The one feature that truly unites not only people but also the natural environment around them.

2022 – Drama – 2h 23m – 3,5 in scale 1-5 Director: Hlynour Palmason, Interpetations: Elliott Crosset, Hovelngvar Sigurdsson, Vic Carmen Sonne.
